the good people of bangladesh

I was a fat American in Bangladesh in 2010.
It was around noon.
It was 105 degrees, with 100% humidity and I was out of shape and dehydrated.

I knew I was about to pass out and these lovely people grabbed me and my gear and helped me into one of their homes.

A home made of scrap metal and wood and cardboard, located in an alley and surrounded by trash and dirt.

One person got me a towel, someone else got me a bottle of water.
And they and my producer took care of me until I was able to stand again.

This is what good, decent people do.

People who don’t have much, but their hearts are full of love and compassion and they will share with you what little they have because at that moment they see you need it more than them.

Good people do not close their doors, or their borders on people in need.

To the governors and Republican leaders saying that you won’t take any Syrian refugees, you are perfect examples of how to not be a good person. You are everything wrong with this country, rolled up into one giant ball of ignorance and fear.

I feel sorry for you, and my great big hope is that your children look at you and realize that they have to be better than you.
